Detroit Free Press

Lately I've been stopping off at the gas station on my morning run and picking up a Detroit Free Press. I don't know what it is about that paper, but I really dig it. It's designed well, and I'm getting to where I look forward to certain features, like Wednesdays "The Puck" - a section all about hockey (Red Wings).
Anyhow, I suppose this post will be my tribute to the paper - today's had some cool articles.

Take the Jeopardy quiz! Today through Thursday, you can take the 50 question, 50 category test on the Jeopardy website. If you pass, you may just get a phone call to be on the show. And if you do, let me know, because I think the only time I ever watched that show was when my grandma was baby sitting me and I struggled to sit through the half hour show..

So, this dude from Redford, MI has gone on strike to protest the lack of time he gets to spend with his wife. I saw the picture of the kids, and they are really young. He thinks he has it bad now.. I have some friends that have teenage kids. They work odd shifts/hours, and between running the kids around for school functions, hockey practice/games, etc. - they hardly ever get time together. I say suck it up buddy, or start saving up for child support. HusbandOnStrike.com

Whoa.. check out the MonoWheel!

Yzerman netted another last night, putting him at an all-time scoring record of 690 - tied with the great Mario Lemiux. Four more goals, and he can tie Mark Messier. I'd go for that, then call it quits. It would take another couple years to reach Wayne Gretzky's all-time scoring record (#1) - at 894 goals.

Finally, on Freep.com, there is a really nice Guide to Downtown Detroit. The interactive map includes parking, restaurants, facts, party hot spots and shopping locations. Very cool.

I've heard mixed reviews on their beers - but it's the closest brewery to me, so I might as well give it a try. I'll take some pictures and post them later on.

Lets start off this weeks links with a game. I think you'll REALLY dig this game, it's called "Don't shoot the puppy".. Give it a try, I didn't do so good - that poor puppy.

This blog called "Free iTunes Songs notifies you each time a free song is posted on iTunes for your downloading pleasure. Enjoy.

Easter is right around the corner! My favorite thing to do during my sisters annual easter egg coloring event, is to sit amongst the table with all of the kids color eggs, and make eggs that say "poop" or "Dork Face".. every year it makes those kids laugh. But, if you don't want to get your hands dirty -check out this online easter egg coloring site. Bad thing is, you can't crack open a cold one and eat the egg after.

What animal would best suit your personality? Looks like I'm a dog. Not that its a bad thing, but I'm trust worthy, and loyal and.. like to lick peoples faces. haha. Take the quiz.. let me know what you are.

Porn star wine: I suppose this is one way to sell wine.

Did ya'll see the new Coca-Cola Blak? Anyone try it yet? I heard it tastes like a mixture of coffee and flat coke. This sounds like another bomb like Crystal Pepsi.

Alright everyone, have a great weekend. Oh yeah, the picture above is from our night out with diggity dan at Beaver Creek in Westland, MI.

10 miles and cabbage

Here's the map of my run. When I hit the five mile mark, I just turned around and ran the route over again.

Whew. I'm beat!

Not as bad as I thought I would be though. I imagined myself after a 10 mile run having to lay down with ice or a heating pad. It really wasn't all that bad, but I didn't really meet my time expectations either.
I started the run at 6:00 a.m. It was 17 degrees outside, and a toasty 67 inside. At the last minute, I decided to bring a water with me, which now I blame that water bottle for slowing me down (gotta blame something!).
The first couple miles I was clocking 9 minute miles, which isn't all that great, but it's decent. At the beginning of my third mile I had to stop and tie my shoe. By the time I reached the fourth mile, it was looking like I was getting close to 10 minute miles, which for me is pretty slow - but I was taking it really slow and cautious. I wasn't sure how I'd feel come mile 8.
The one thing I learned about this run, and I should have know - but never eat cabbage the night before a big run. No, there wasn't any pit stops needed, but I did feel a knot in my stomach and I kept thinking of that second helping of cabbage i grabbed last night at my moms annual jigs dinner.
The water was helpful, I read just before the run on the net, that water you drink as you run you immediately sweat out. It sort of game me an extra boost, but carrying the bottle sucked. I had it in my hoody pocket, where it was bouncing against me as I ran. So, then I carried it, which was a little bit better, then eventually stuffed it in my pants pocket.. as you can see, I was pretty annoyed with the water bottle situation.
After the 6th mile I felt pretty decent, I was trucking along at a decent pace, and any pains I had at the beginning of the run had gone away. Midway into mile 8, I realized I was 15 minutes-ish away from a 90 minute mark. I picked up my pace the rest of the time. At about the 9 mile mark, running at this faster pace, I felt a strange feeling, nothing bad, but i finally felt my body saying, " dude, what the hell are you doing to me?!"... I wasn't in any pain, but my breathing was a little off balance because I was going faster. I kept up the pace, maybe sped up a little more, trying to make up some time. As I crossed Monroe St. for the last time, heading back into my neighborhood, I checked for cars about five times. I realized I was in a daze, and I wanted to make darn sure there were no cars coming. I remember thinking.. ahh, so that's why they mark off areas for runners in a long distance race. I can see being so focused and in that hazey zoned out mode, that looking for cars would be a hassle.
My last half mile went pretty quick. When I got to my road, I kept my eyes focused on the little red Honda Civic the whole way down the road.
I finished in 93 minutes and 30 seconds. According to my trusty wrist watch. Maybe more, or less considering it's not a stop watch. That's a 9 minute and 33 second mile.
I suppose it's a good starting point for me, and something to work at. I just started doing speed workouts, and I'll continue doing them through the summer. The other day I did 3 miles in 21 minutes - 7 minute miles. I know I couldn't keep that pace up, but they say speed runs help the long distance run.

So, how do I feel? Not bad at all. I'm drinking a water, eating a banana and actually freezing my ass off. It's kind of cold in my house now that my body temperature is cooling off.
I'm sure this was a pretty boring blog post, but I wanted to ramble about my first semi-long distance run while it was fresh in my head. All in all, it was a success, and I'm going to keep training for a longer run!

Happy day.

So happy St. Pat's day - today is a unique day for some Catholic dioceses participating in lentent, they actually get to break from the "no meat on friday" tradition, and can indulge in corned beef - just as long as they make it up another day during the week. I especially like to hang out with that Catholic crew during the summer, those church festivals are crazier then some college parties I've been to!

Anyhow, my yearly tradition since I've been capable of consuming alcohol was to go out and drink as much beer as I could for the St. Pat's occasion. But this year, my 'dioceses' is strongly suggesting a massive amount of water intake tonight, instead of booze.
On Saturday morning, I'll be running my first 10 mile run. Not for charity, or for a running event, just for the hell of it. I try and do one long run on the weekends, last weekend was 7 miles, this weekend, I'm going to up that by three. My weekly distance has been 30 miles, which I plan to increase as the weather gets warmer. I did get some cold weather and safety-reflective running gear, so it's made it easier to run at 5 a.m. when it's 19 degrees outside. So, have a beer for me, and as your sleeping in or kneeling over the toilet puking Saturday morning, hopefully I'll be on my way to finishing my first 10 mile run.
I am going to stick to tradition somewhat, and have a pint of Guiness for lunch today. A gang of us are going to McGeady's pub in Monroe for a yearly traditional St. Pat's day luncheon.

Exercise music for runners - This is like techno funky music. I wasn't too impressed with the first one I downloaded, but I'm going to give them a try, what else do I have to do on a 10 mile run!

I forgot all about this website. Fark.com is the king of 'off the wall' news. Rss this sucka!

Game: Check this out just for the fact that it's absolutely amazing. I don't even think I can describe it. It's flash, and your some organism swimming around gobbling up ocean particles. Sounds weird, but its really cool. Click here.

Craigs List redesigned: I hope CraigsList takes them up on this! Very cool idea.

Reservoir Dogs poster created from the words in the entire script of the movie.

40 ouncers and power wheels (the battery powered kids cars) - This looks like a Jack Ass stunt to me. Very funny.

Hey Aaron, give these a shot: Great pick up lines to use on St. Patties Day - (After 8 beers of course!).

One last thing I almost forgot! If your a fan of the NBC show "The Office", you'll appreciate the blog.

Alright - off for a short 3 miler and to bake some banana bread.

El Guitarrista

I picked up this framed poster at Beyond The Wall in Ann Arbor. The artist is Justin Bua. I'm going to hang this in my office if the decoration department at work lets me.
Ann Arbor was amazing today. It was warm, sunny and the students were sprawled all over the city and campas. I wandered around checking out a few stores and did a lot of people watching. I stumbled onto a restaurant that I've been wanting to try, The Jamaican Jerkpit. The guy working there was really cool, with a deep Jamaican accent. He told me the pork sandwich is the top seller. I had a choice between barbecue or jerk seasoning, he said the jerk is hot - so of course I chose the jerk. It was amazing, but almost too hot. My mouth was numb for an hour after.
I went to the thrift store while I was there and picked up some new-ish hockey socks and a cigar cutter for fifty cents, still in the package! Anyhow, it was a good day.

Check out my latest "want".. it's a Forerunner 301 running watch. It monitors your heart rate, speed, distance, pace and calories burned. It actually has an embedded GPS sensor that can actually tell you how to get home, I know I'll use that option, especially when I run blindfolded.

Who is that dude?

Don't ask me who the picture of the dude is, I did a google picture search for Westland, MI and that picture was like the 10th pic.
Sorry for the lack of posts. My couch/computer time has been replaced with running 5 miles daily. I'll probably do more postings on the weekends, but this warm weather has me running like a mad man! :) On with the cool links I've ran across this week:

The Hills Have Eyes - Have you watched this movie preview? I got scared just seeing this - I don't even need to see the movie now.

A story of my buddy in Colorado that saw Dog the Bounty Hunter in the Wal-Mart parking lot. My first question was - Did he have those sunglasses on dude?!

Check out these computer work station/chairs. It looks kind of cozy.

Free e-books. - not audio, but worth checking out, there are some good titles.

Having trouble picking the sexiest women of 2006? I wasn't actually, but I took this little test anyways. Kind of cool how they do the video, it's like she's actually talking to me!

Whoa. While we're on the chicks subject - is this possible?!

Looks like Henry the blogger is into video postings himself - Check it out.

Mj the golfer

Can you tell I'm having fun with my new YouTube account? This is a video of my buddy Matt (Mj) golfing into the lake in Stanton, MI. This was May of 2005 - you can hear the birds chirping! So, this is what we do during the day at the lake when we're not fishing, drinking beer or shooting a bb-gun.
Blogger has been having issues lately, so I left off the last post on my blog. I had to post it because who doesn't like watching skate boarders crash and burn?! See for yourself!
